3,500 kilometers lay ahead of the Olympic torch when it was lit on March 12, 2020, in the sacred grove of ancient Olympia, in the presence of IOC President Thomas Bach. It began its journey toward Tokyo – but did not travel far. After just one day, the torch relay in Greece was halted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the torch eventually reached Japan, the Olympic Games were postponed to 2021. Consequently, the planned exhibition Pierre de Coubertin and the Arts was in jeopardy – an exhibition first presented in 2016 at the Olympic Village and later at Club France in Rio de Janeiro. The realization of how fragile such initiatives can be in the face of nature’s unpredictability led to the decision to transform the exhibition into a virtual experience.
A virtual exhibition transcends boundaries such as opening hours or language. Coubertin’s artworks were staged along a freely explorable path within a three-dimensional space. Interaction with his art reached a new dimension: while physical museums shield artworks with barriers and guards, in the virtual realm, interaction is explicitly encouraged. »Touching« a piece allows the visitor to explore its story in greater depth – a single click is enough.
The Japanese edition of Coubertin and the Arts was dedicated to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – a digital homage to Coubertin’s spirit and to the enduring idea of fair competition.
